Medical Exams for Temporary Residents
If you are coming to Canada as an international student or a temporary foreign worker, IRCC may require you to complete an Immigration Medical Exam (IME) before your visa or permit can be approved.
Who Needs a Medical Exam?
You typically need a medical exam if:
- You plan to stay in Canada for more than 6 months and have recently lived in a designated country or territory.
- You plan to work in a job where public health must be protected, regardless of how long you are staying (e.g., healthcare workers, childcare workers, primary or secondary school teachers, and agricultural workers).
Student Direct Stream (SDS) & Upfront Medicals
If you are applying for a study permit through the Student Direct Stream (SDS), you are required to get an Upfront Medical Exam before you submit your application. We frequently process SDS medicals and will provide you with the exact eMedical tracking sheet you need to include with your study permit application.
What to Bring
Please bring your original valid passport. If you have already applied and IRCC sent you an IMM 1017 form, bring that as well. If you have not applied yet, simply let our front desk know you need an "Upfront Medical Exam" for your study or work permit.
